Anything could happen in this world…anything…even Blue Screen of Death in a virtual machine! First of all, I am not blaming Microsoft / Windows / Sophos, because this is probably a driver problem. I was playing around and doing some tests on the virtual machines lately, trying out all the major anti-virus software. (more…)

Wei Ping @ Arana

Wei Ping, who use to be my flatmate in 2005, was back in Dunedin for a conference last week. Brett, Daw, Darren and a few of us had dinner together @ the Golden Harvest on Monday night. It feels like she is still living in 117…because all of us haven’t changed much.

Here are the photos that I took:

Next year will be my final year, hopefully I will have the chance to go back to China and meet all my room mates 🙂

Computers are just like human beings, sometimes they just refuse to work and you have to perform some “Magic” to make them behave again. On Thursday night, I was confronted with a situation where I have to fix a hard drive with a partition table problem! To make things more complicated, the data on the hard drive wasn’t backed up at all because all of the USB ports on the laptop failed to work!!! To be honest, this is the first time I come across a situation like this, hopefully I will learn something from this computer. And here is what I have gone through to get fix the problem.

dpreview is the first (and probably the only) web site I will visit if I want to find out anything about digital cameras. Today I was searching for Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III‘s wallpaper and found the video below. It’s interesting to see how the cleaning system works 🙂

还记得以前曾经在某论坛上面听人说过一句话:

(有钱的话)马克兔(1D/1Ds MarkII)一买买两部,一部拍,一部拆!

现在马克兔III都出来了,不知道会流行一些什么样的说法 😉

After Mike saw the photos I took for my friend Yun Sing, he wanted to have the same “style” of photos taken before he returns his suite. So I spent the afternoon walking around the campus with my camera and took some photos for him. I have to say, you wouldn’t know how beautiful our uni is until you really take some pictures for your friend’s graduation. We have both old and modern buildings around the campus; the Clock Tower gives you an ancient feel of otago, while the Center of Innovation and the Central Library gives you a really contemporary feel of the campus.

Below are some of the best ones:

This evening, I went to Mike‘s place to borrow his external flash unit (Sony HVL-F1000) for his graduation photo shot tomorrow afternoon. In order to get familiar with the flash, I took a few pictures of him and his family…well…quite a few actually…106! Think about how much that would cost if you use a film camera 😦

Below are some of the good ones that I liked 🙂

Mike, one of my friends from Computer Science is graduating today!  He invited us to his graduation party @ The Seventh Day Adventist Church.  Quite a few people from Computer Science turned up; including Armin!!!  During the party, we heard lots of interesting things about Mike, such as how he met his wife 😉  It’s good to see lots of your friends gathering under the same roof and hang out together, but its also sad to see your friends graduating because you probably won’t see them very often:(

Just came back from the graduation parade this afternoon; took a few photos for my friend Yun Sing, Nathan (my lecturer) and Chris from Computer Science.  I have been to one of these parade a few years ago; from the photos, the parade might seem quite “small”, but that’s because this is only the “mid-year” graduation parade; you will get a lot more people when you graduate at the end of the year.

If you have been using Gmail (Google’s web mail), you have probably seen the word Google Reader already (when you’ve got no mail in your Inbox, you will see it), but chances are that you are just like me, who sees it everyday but never actually click on the link they provided.  So what exactly is Google Reader and why should I care?  In order to answer this question, you have to ask yourself whether you are a person who reads news regularly and want to keep up to date on what is happening all over the world.  If you are that kind of person, then you should really consider to give Google Reader a try 🙂

I was working this morning when Paul gave me a call and ask me whether I can have a look of a student’s laptop that’s loaded with Chinese versions of XP. I went to his office and discovered that the laptop was having a Chinese version XP Pro. Paul told me there were viruses and trojans on the laptop, and for some reason, some functions like Windows Firewall just won’t start anymore. (we have checked the services related to Firewall). The laptop has been scanned with Sophos before, but since no anti-virus software can guarantee 100% detection rate, I bought the laptop with me and scanned it with Kaspersky to see whether I can find any more “bad guys” on the machine. The results turned out to be very interesting: (more…)

After seeing the post Apple posts Mac event video, iLife tutorials, software updates on Appleinsider, I decided to have a look of the tutorials from Apple. I didn’t expect they have so many tutorials covering these two new apps (iLife and iWork), and since I am using dial up, I have decided to down them instead (of watching them one by one online). So if you got a slow connection like me or if you want to down them to watch it a few more times, feel free to click on the links below and get the tutorial that you want 🙂

Microsoft just released an update which will improve the performance of your Windows Vista Operating System(under certain conditions). The update will address the following issues:

  • You experience a long delay when you try to exit the Photos screen saver.
A memory leak occurs when you use the Windows Energy screen saver.
  • If User Account Control is disabled on the computer, you cannot install a network printer successfully. This problem occurs if the network printer is hosted by a Windows XP-based or a Windows Server 2003-based computer.
  • When you write data to an AVI file by using the AVIStreamWrite function, the file header of the AVI file is corrupted.
  • When you copy or move a large file, the “estimated time remaining” takes a long time to be calculated and displayed. (more…)
