I was having a bit of problem with Vista’s Windows Update in the central library…I am keep getting the follow error message:
I didn’t know this until a few people ask me why their Windows Update won’t work on their Vista 😦 Since I am working this morning, I spent a bit of time and try to find the solution on the Internet. My friend Chaks uses the Windows Vista Ultimate and he said he didn’t have this problem since he upgraded to Ultimate! He even sent me a link with the work around that I can use under Vista Business (and perhaps other versions like Home Premium). Thanks Chaks 😉
Below is the step by step work around (solution) to solve Vista’s Windows Update problem. However, do remember that if you set the proxy for your laptop and later on you want to use Windows Update elsewhere, you have to reset the proxy before you can use Windows Update, or else it might not work at all.
Step 1. Go to Start Menu -> Programs -> Accessories -> Right click on the Command Prompt and select the Run as administrator option:
Step 2. Type in netsh and press enter:
Step 3. Type in winhttp:
Step 4. If you want to check out the current proxy settings, just type in show proxy
Step 5. If you want to set the proxy for Windows Update, just type in set proxy proxy.student.otago.ac.nz:3128
Step 6. Now if you want to check whether you have done the right settings, type in show proxy and check your settings:
Step 7. If you want to reset the proxy settings back to normal (direct connect), just type in reset proxy:
Now if you do Windows Update in Vista, you will see:
(Thanks Chaks for providing the last screen shot).
