A step by step guide on how to reinstall your Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard (附中文翻译)

Reinstalling your own operating system is kind of like a standard task nowadays if you are using your computer(s) extensively. No matter whether you are using a Mac or a PC, your operating system is kind of like “aging” everyday…getting slower and slower until the point you can’t stand it anymore and decide to do a reinstall.

Also…sometimes it takes less time to solve a problem by reinstalling the system rather than taking your time to find the solution itself…although you won’t learn much…but at least you will get the job out of the way.

Reinstalling Windows should be easy because most people are PC users; when you have a problem regarding your installation, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find someone to help you…but what if you are using a Mac?

If you are using a Mac and you don’t know / not sure how to reinstall your Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, please read on and I hope this tutorial will be helpful to you. The steps will also be translated into Simplified Chinese.

Please remember to backup everything on your Mac before you do a system reinstall…this includes the data on your Boot Camp partition (don’t worry about Boot Camp if you have never used it).安装Leopard操作系统之前请记得先备份好你的电脑上面的资料。

Step 0: Insert the Leopard DVD into your Mac, and you should see:

Step 1: Go to System Preferences and click on Startup Disk:
第一步：打开System Preferences，然后再 点击Startup Disk

Step 2: This is what Startup Disk looks like before we do any changes; as you can see, the Hard Drive Icon is selected because we are using our hard drive as the startup disk every time we switch on our Mac:

In order to reinstall the system, we need to use the Leopard DVD to start up our Mac, so just select the Mac OS X DVD and click on the Restart button:

要重装Mac OS X Leopard，我们需要把DVD光盘作为启动盘。 用鼠标/键盘选中Mac OS X DVD光盘，然后按下Restart按钮。

Step 3: After a few moments, you should see:

Just select the language that you are comfortable with. Mac OS X is a multi-language operating system, you can change your system language anytime. (of course, thats after you’ve installed your system)

Step 4: If you’ve changed your mind and decided not to reinstall your system right now, you can always quit the installer:

If you want to continue with the reinstall, please click on the Continue button.

Step 5: From the menu bar at the top of the screen: Click on Utilities -> Disk Utility:

The Disk Utility application will appear shortly:

Step 6: Select your hard drive from the left hand side and click on the Partition tab on the right:

As you can see, I have two partitions (Mac and disk0s3) on my hard drive:

This is because I’ve used Boot Camp on my iMac. If you’ve never used Boot Camp before, you should only have one partition on your hard drive. (unless you have made some changes yourself)

If you only have one partition, please skip the following contents and go straight to Step 8 instead.

If you are like me who have used Boot Camp before and now having two partitions on your hard drive…just change the Volume Scheme to 1 Partition:

如果你像我一样用过Boot Camp的话，记住把Volume Scheme改为1 Partition。

You can even change the Name and Format of the Volume if you like…I normally change the Name only and leave the Format alone:

Step 7: Just click on the Apply button when you are happy with the changes that you’ve made. (Do remember to backup everything first):

Click on the Partition button when you’re sure that you’ve got nothing to lose:

Now quit the Disk Utility application:

Step 8: Now you are back to the Welcome screen again…just click on the Continue button:

Step 9: Click on the Agree button after you have read and agreed with the agreement:

Step 10: Here you can choose where to install your Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard on. In our case, we don’t really have a choice…but just keep in mind that you can install your Mac OS X on all sort of locations. E.g. On your USB external hard drive.

Step 11: Select your Hard Drive and click on the Options button:

Step 12: Here you’ll have 3 options regarding how the system is installed. In our case, the 1st and 3rd one makes no difference because we’ve erased everything already. However, if you are installing Leopard for somebody else and they haven’t backed up their data, you can use the 2nd option (Archive and install). I strongly recommend that you backup everything first before you do a system reinstall (regardless of which option you use)…life is like a box of chocolate…you never know what you’re gonna get.

The 3rd option probably suits most people if they haven’t used Boot Camp before:

Click on the OK button when you’ve made your choice.Click on the Continue button when you’re ready:

Step 14: You can click on the Customize button to customize your Leopard installation:

这里你可以自定义你的Leopard安装内容：

Here are the things you can add / remove:

你可以添加/删除打印机驱动，语言包之类的东西：

In my case, I only install a handful of languages:

When you are ready with the customization, click on the Install button to begin the installation:

If you don’t have much time, just click on the Skip button to skip the DVD check:

Step 15: Click on the Restart button after the installation has completed:

In my case, I don’t need to do that, so I choose the 4th option.Step 20: Here you can choose your wireless service:

If you don’t want to do that right now, you can click on the Different Network Setup button and click on the last option:

Step 21: Here you can enter your personal information; which will be used for the registration later on:

If you don’t use a password to protect your account, you will get the following message:

Just click on OK if you insist not to use a password for your account.

Step 24: Here you can choose / take a photo for your account:

Step 25: Here you will have the choice of registering now or later:

Step 26: Here you can choose your time zone. Just click on where you are on the map:

Step 30: Don’t forget to update your system as soon as you are connected to the Internet…just in case you’re wondering…here is how:Click on the Apple Logo on the top left hand corner, then click on the Software Update, and install all the updates that you can see

最后不要忘记做软件更新。 当你联入网络后，用鼠标点击屏幕左上方的苹果图标，然后选中Software Update，最后把Software Update里面的所有更新都装上。
