I have been using the Google Calendar for some time now; mainly for organizing my time table. I have never noticed the SMS notification until I really had a good look into the settings during my winter holiday a few weeks ago. The SMS notification is great…but not too sure how much they are charging for this service. Last week I heard Brendan (my Head of Department) saying that he uses the SMS notification as well, and it seems to be free! To make things clear, I emailed Vodafone but I haven’t got any reply from them yet
Anyway, here is how to set up the SMS notification in Google Calendar:
Step 0. Get an Gmail account if you don’t already have one, and sign up for Google Calendar: www.google.com/calendar
Step 1. Once you got your calendar, open it up and click on Settings on the upper right corner of your browser:
Step 2. In the settings page, click on Mobile Setup:
Step 3. Now select your country. In New Zealand, only Vodafone is supported:
Step 4. Enter your phone number in the text box:
Step 5. After about 10 seconds, you should get a SMS sent by Google with your verification code. Just enter the code that you got in here:
Remember to click on Finish setup when you have finished entering the code.
Step 6. Now click on the Save button to save the settings you have changed:
Step 7. Lets create a new event and try out the SMS notification. Click on Create Event just under the Google Calendar icon:
Step 8. I have got No reminders set by default, but you might have email reminder for your default:
Step 9. Click on Add a reminder and you should get this:
Step 10. Now click on the “black arrow” and the drop down menu will appear. Select the SMS reminder from the list:
Step 11. Select the time that you want to receive the SMS notification:
Step 12. Fill out the other areas and click on Save to save the settings. Now you should expect to receive an SMS notification when your event happens

For all you UK guys/gals, i’ve been on Orange and Virgin and (as with the rest of the networks) its always free. Have been using google sms for over a year now. Its great.
Btw: technical info: I’m still investigating, but i’m pretty sure now: it will show you the first 57 characters you type in your event.
